Abstract

Abstract

Corrosion of structural steel bridge elements due to eksposed to the environment becomes a serious problem in the world today. Therefore, the aim of this research is to evaluate the residual strength of corroded steel plates which are seen in the steel bridge structure elements under buckling load by experimental laboratory and computational analyses. Specimen tests are obtained from a part of the girder bridge that has been corroded due to chemical reactions with it’s around environment for years and reduced its thickness through become the irregular surfaces. They were then fabricated based on standard of test specimen of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS No.5, 1995). 2D scanning system was condacted to specimen test in order to obtain the grid data x and y coordinates to form Finite Element Model (FEM). The test results reveal that corrosion on steel plates is able to reduce the bearing capacity under buckling load. Also effect of some parameter studies such as minimum thickness (tmin), irregular surfaces and the amount of eccentricity to buckling behavior of corroded steel plates was studied here. Then, a new proposal formula is developed that able to be used for deciding and evaluating the residual buckling load of corroded steel plates with or without the effect of an amount of eccentricity.
