Abstract

While Endek cloth weaving Bali is a long-standing tradition for Balinese people, there is currently an urgency to achieve sustainability. The concern of addressing environmental aspects makes traditional clothing more relevant to the present and future. This paper aims to connect Balinese Endek weaving with natural dyes to preserve the tradition and adapt it to today?s needs. Implementing a participatory approach and collaborating with Poni Songket, the weaver?s community and SME in the Buleleng district of Bali province, this research developed state-of-the-art innovative designs for Balinese Endek weaving by utilizing local potentials such as traditional architecture (paddy and paddy barns) as inspiration for the designs and local natural dyes from the surrounding area for colorization of the fabric. These practices will open advanced opportunities to enhance the community?s economic perspective and expand their knowledge to support sustainable purposes of Indonesia Emas 2045 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.

Nadia Arfan, Institut Teknologi Bandung

Nadia Arfan has emerged as a leading figure in the Indonesian textile craft domain since beginning her journey in textiles as a student at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 2005. Focusing on Surface Textile Design, Sustainable Craft, and Community Development, her scholarly pursuits reflect a holistic engagement with her craft's artistic and socioeconomic aspects. Actively showcasing her innovative works in local, national, and international exhibitions underscores her commitment to sharing her creative vision globally. Her dedication has led to her appointment as a respected faculty member within the Craft Study Program at the Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, where she continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of textile artisans and designers.

Dian Widiawati, Institut Teknologi Bandung

Dian Widiawati, an esteemed academic faculty member within the Craft Study Program at the Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, is actively engaged in textile craft research, particularly on natural fibres and dyes. Her scholarly pursuits extend to community empowerment initiatives and sustainable design matters, reflecting a multifaceted dedication to advancing knowledge within her field. In addition to her research endeavours, Dian Widiawati has garnered significant recognition within the academic community, receiving invitations to participate in exhibitions. Sasanti Puri Ardini, Institut Teknologi Bandung

Sasanti Puri Ardini is an enthusiastic assistant lecturer at the Craft Study Program within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). With a bachelor's degree in ceramic crafts and a master's in design from ITB, she possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience in ceramics and craftsmanship. Puri teaches various classes in the craft studies program, including ceramic decoration, sculptural ceramics, workshops, and craft entrepreneurship. Beyond teaching, she actively conducts research, focusing on ceramic sustainability and material experimentation. Her thesis explores the utilisation of ceramic production waste for ceramic products through a material-driven design approach, with a case study on PT. Jenggala Keramik Bali. Also, Puri is involved in ceramic design and Nerikomi artistry, creating ceramic jewellery under the Alunbiru studio brand.
