Binge watching: cara baru menonton televisi sebagai dampak konvergensi media

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi: 1) motif individu dalam aktivitas Binge Watching (BW) yang membedakannya dengan menonton televisi 2) bagaimana teknologi memotivasi individu dalam praktik BW pada konteks Indonesia; 3) bagaimana individu mengevaluasi aktivitas mereka menonton binge. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa informan memiliki motif BW untuk memperbaiki suasana hati, mengalihkan perhatian, sebagai hiburan, kebiasaan, relaksasi, yang dibahas dalam penelitian Uses and Gratifications (U&G) mengenai motif khalayak dalam menonton televisi. Selain itu, ditemukan beberapa motif BW lain seperti menamatkan cerita, tidak mau ketinggalan mendapatkan informasi, terlibat lebih ke dalam cerita. Namun dalam penelitian ini ditemukan satu motif yang belum pernah dibahas dalam penelitian lain, yaitu inspirasi proyek fiksi. Kepraktisan dari sisi teknologi juga berperan dalam aktivitas BW, yang meskipun disadari oleh pengguna memiliki dampak buruk, namun dirasa memiliki manfaat lebih besar yang tidak dapat diabaikan.
